Jason's Review

Of the "new and improved flavors" berry is still my least favorite, the orange is relatively superior to berry, and the lemon-lime is slightly better than the orange. This is, of course, a matter of taste, but I find them all relatively enjoyable. The bitterness of the original "Chaser" branded products is almost completely gone, and the remaining tartness is almost enjoyable, like a warhead candy.

I'm energized, and can stand by all the claims that this product makes. I usually don't drink this on an empty stomach, and have never expected it to do anything unreasonable, like make me want to garden at 4AM after being awake for 47.5 hours. I only mention this, as it appears that some people do expect it to completely alleviate the need for sleep...ever. This is not true. When I use this product "reasonably", IE, I just woke up, only got 5 hours of sleep, and need to be awake and alert, I feel much better after drinking a 5 hour energy than I would otherwise. Also, if I got up early, and I need to stay awake until 2-3AM, and be relatively alert, again, this product helps. This is also true of On Go Energy, and likely of the host of new energy shots coming on the market, which we intend to review soon.

The prices have come down significantly. Our first review was at $2.99, the second at $2.50, and at the time of this review, 5-Hour Energy can be acquired through the links on this site easily for $2 each; a great value, particularly if you use these regularly, and will invariably consume at least 12 of these in a month.

Guests's Review

5-Hour Energy Orange has a great flavor (particularly compared to the original that we reviewed in 2005), goes down smoothly. I prefer it cold, but it's not unpalatable at room temperature. The Original 5-Hour Energy is our most commented drink on the site. There are a range of inputs of various topics either covered in the television commercials, or on the bottle. I decided to address those myself, since I've consumed a reasonable number of 5-Hour Energy Shots.

Q. Does it provide 5 hours of energy?

A. For me, the energy is not spastic, like I might get from drinking 2 Monster XXLs, but I feel relatively awake and alert, usually ready to accomplish something for several hours.

Q. Does it cause you to crash later?

A. I never have. Some people say, "after a while, I felt like I did before I drank it", well, that's not crashing, that's natural. A crash would be if you felt far worse than you did before. My best answer, I've never drank one in the morning, and felt any more inclined to take a nap at noon than I would any other time. Also, I can usually "come down" in plenty of time to get to sleep (assuming I drink it several hours before trying to sleep).

Q. What is a Niacin Flush?

A. Of the great number of 5-Hour Energy shots I've consumed, I've had 1 Niacin Flush, my skin (particularly my face, forearms, and hands) felt warm (like putting parts of your body into a warm bathtub), mildly tingly, and turned slightly red. As described on the bottle, this lasted for a few minutes, then I was fine. Others have described profound affects, even claim to have gone to the hospital. I don't know if these claims are valid, or if perhaps the people making the claims are trigger happy on calling an ambulance. I'd recommend trying part of a bottle the first time to see how you react.

Q. Do you really need to "hold nose while drinking"?

A. No, those comments by Angie were made about the Ver. 1.0 of 5-Hour Energy, and the new versions are not despicable tasting at all.

Q. Is there a place I can get these for less than $2.49-$2.99 each?

A. Absolutely, Buy 5 Hour Energy for less than $2 each (cases of 12 for $20) from many of the Amazon stores (this is the same as the link which you may or may not see above, depending on where you are viewing this review).

Great taste, effective, no crash, and under $2, this is a good value as well.

5-Hour Energy Orange can or bottle design and textual information
The 2 ounce energizing bottle we've all come to know and love since our first review of 5-Hour Energy Berry Flavor back in October 2005. That guy on the front is still running!!1!!one! This bottle looks pretty much the same, of course, they've dropped the "Chaser" from the name, which happened some time ago, and have added some orange graphics and the text "New orange flavor". Also, there are directions/warnings on the back, which I appear to be new, or I didn't document them in the past. "For maximum energy: drink entire bottle at one time. For moderate energy: Drink a half bottle or less. Use or discard within 72 hours after opening. Refrigeration not necessary. CAUTION: Contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Limit caffeine products to avoid nervousness, sleeplessness, and occasionally rapid heartbeat. You may experience a Niacin flush (hot feeling, skin redness) that lasts a few minutes. This is caused by Niacin (Vitamin B3) increasing blood flow near the skin. Not for use by children under 12 years of age. Phenylketonurics: Contains phenylalanine". "Feel it in minutes ? lasts for hours". Lastly, 5- Hour Energy Orange is described as a "Dietary Supplement".

i took a 5 hr energy shot at 9pm to stay awake to study for an exam and finish a few hw assignments due by midnight.. at midnight i took excedrin pm to fall asleep and get rest for the exam in the morning... now i am restless, my heart is beating wicked fast and im breathing heavy..i cant fall asleep... this is kinda scary so i wouldnt suggest anyone doing it... what was i thinking?! Response by Jason: It doesn't seem like you were thinking very much, Michael Jackson. Uppers that purport giving you five hours of energy, then downers to fall asleep 3 hours later? Heck, if you just needed to study for three hours, try a Coca-Cola and a splash of cold water to the face.
Sensaye@2012-12-05 16:42:21
I had been taking 5-hour energy shots about every other day for a year or so and it was effective and helpful for a while. The last couple times I've taken it I broke out into a nasty case of hives. I dont know if there were subtle ingredient changes or my body just reacts differently to it now, but whatever the case I can't use 5-hour energy any more. Not worth the side effects.

To the owner of this website: What's the point of having reviews and then try and add your personal opinion to people's reviews? That defeats the purpose of having a review board in the first place. Just because a person says something you don't like or agree with, you come in and add to their reviews? Doesnt' that take the authenticity from the review? Wow. When I want info on a product I want "real" user reviews not some made up happy story just to appease the owners or sellers of the products. That's what a review is in case you didn't know! Response by Jason: Why don't you whine about it? What does any of this have to do with 5 hour energy? The point of writing a comment about 5 hour energy is to talk about 5 hour energy.

Cheryl... that tends to happen when you mix any energy drink with large amounts of crystal meth.
Cheryl@2012-05-15 14:04:48
Took this 5-hour energy junk to keep awake for a drive home and ended up in the hospital with major palpitations and a severe "panic attack." ER & ambulance tecs told me it's the "worst stuff ever" and that they get people in all the time because of it. Nice.
bandit@2012-04-10 14:19:54
Oh my, 5-hour energy orange borders on undrinkable. I had to hold my nose to finish it off. Think of fermented cough syrup. Also, it made my eyes twitch.
nancy@2011-12-01 16:19:26
I don't think 5 hour energy causes a heart attack. There was probably an underlying cause to that problem. 5 hour works great for me. I work 3rd shift on w/ends with approximately 6 hours sleep from Fri am to Sun pm. I usually take a 8 oz RED Bull(sugar free) while driving to work. 3-4 hours later I take the 5 hour energy. This gets me thru until about 6am.(Shift is 9pm-830am). I jump around for a minute or two, and then I'm good until my shift ends. No crash, no jitters. Only works if you had some sleep. I find that if you body needs sleep, it doesn't matter what you take, you're going to have to get sleep. There are no substitutes for proper rest.
kosmoz11@2011-10-24 16:58:02
5 hour energy has killed more people than the media has allowed. All you need is a sufficient night's sleep and a little exercise. Thats it! You're wasting your money on this synthetic blend of poppycock. It's balderdash I tell you!
Kalena@2011-07-08 16:19:11
Bought a few bottles for .75 (close to expiration date). This stuff rocks! I usually am ready to sleep around 2 pm but drank a bottle and accomplished most of the things I wanted to do for the day! It's like motivation in a bottle - made me realize it's not being "motivated" to do your tasks it is not having the energy to do it. Once I had the energy to do it - things were so much more effortless! I'll take this just on the weekends when I can stay up later at night and don't need the extra energy for my desk job. But for the weekends - watch out!!!!
Nancy@2011-01-13 12:14:52
I also work third shift as a police/EMS/Fire/911 dispatcher. I always make sure I have a bottle of 5-hour energy available. It really makes those hours from 4am-7am tolerable and productive. I have no bad side effects and am able to go home and go to sleep when the shift is over. I highly recommend this product.
John@2010-10-08 12:59:26
I had a strange reaction from the berry flavor 5-hour energy-wired me up like a 2 dollar watch. Never had this type from other flavors. Sent the company an e mail asking why--they called me within an hour. Had a long and pleasant discussion concerning the use of product. No real answer but they were very responsive and interested.
Bob@2010-09-23 14:06:19
I have used Five-Hour Energy for about a year. I am 60 years old and have had no adverse effects. It is NOT an every day boost. I only take it when I am short on sleep and must continue going with a clear mind. It takes away the groggy feeling and helps me to stay awake like coffee but without the jitters. Great product but poor taste.
Armone@2010-09-15 12:20:52
5 hour energy works very well for me. I use it on long drives, big advantage is less restroom stops. I also use it for work (medical transcription). Please remember that energy drinks are fine, but if you want to be awake and think straight, you also need protein.

taste: 8
energy: 10

Wow, I found out something else about 5 hour energy. I drank one and later that night had sex and it was the best sex I have every had and I am 47 years old.
Bob@2010-07-19 16:49:45
I just drank a 5 hour energy shot about an hour ago. The taste wasn't terrible but not great. If it was supposed to be orange flavored it was a very weak orange. Anyway, there was no energy boost and actually I'm about to fall asleep. Don't waste your money.
dmlv@2010-07-19 16:35:58
Tried taking one bottle of 5 hour energy the 1st time & didn't feel any effects, so drank 2 bottles next time & was more alert. Have tasted lemon lime & orange flavors, and I'm sorry, but I don't agree with those who say it's pleasant tasting. This is the worst energy drink around, but the only one that doesn't make you feel bloated by drinking 16 carbonated ounces of it. That is it's only saving grace. I have to chase it with a candy bar to get rid of the taste.
ChuckWagon@2010-07-05 16:46:16
I have had good results with 5 hour energy. Generally, I feel it start to "leave me" after 4 - 4-1/2 hours but no "crash" effect. Bottom line - it does the job.
Sunshine@2010-06-30 13:15:33
JASON!!!! LOVE your comments! You are ONE FUNNY MAN! I just started taking Five Hour Energy and it's FUN! Yeah, it's an ENERGY drink. If you get jittery on coffee, well, use your head peeps! I'm hooked on the stuff. NO ADDICTS - not like 'that'.... Just good energy!
Christine@2010-06-30 13:14:59
I loved the taste and the energy was great. But... a little more then 5 hours after I drank it I broke out into hives. I read online that breaking out into hives from it is kind of common. The next day I was crashing in the afternoon again so I thought I might be ok if I only drank half the energy drink this time. Horrible idea. I have never seen hives that bad. The second day was 10 times worse then the first. Both times the hives started coming 5+ hours after I drank it. They lasted about 3 days but they were so bad I couldn't sleep. I really wish I could still drink the drink since the energy from it was great. But the hives were terrible!!!

I'm 32 yrs old.I usually take 5 hour energy after lunch to make it through the rest of the day. Works great for me. No jitters, no crash.....just enough energy. Recommended to a friend and he loves it. Taste isn't bad at all. I enjoy berry flavor. Never had orange. Will try it though.
Paul@2010-05-28 12:08:48
If I've had a long night I drink half a bottle of 5 hour energy to perk up for work in the morning. They don't make me jittery, just alert and able to focus (on a computer all day). I drink half in the AM and half after lunch, but only once a week or so. The taste is NASTY but they aren't loaded with sugar, and they work for me, so I rinse my mouth with water after drinking it. Taste = 3/10
Effect = 8/10

Susan@2010-05-25 12:53:32
5 hour energy has saved my marriage, I swear. I have kids and a job and by the end of the day, I had no energy left to even communicate with my husband much less even consider anything romantic. I take a bottle of 5 hour in the afternoon and I am up and energetic until 10 pm. I feel like my pre-kid self again. LOVE IT!
STRANGER@2010-05-17 12:50:37
MY DAD TOOK 5 HOUR ENERGY FOR THE FIRST TIME THE OTHER DAY . HE IS HEALTHY AND VERY ACTIVE. HE ENDED UP IN THE HOSPITAL , HE HAD A HEART ATTACK. DR TOLD HIM IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE 5 HOUR ENERGY DRINK.. IS IT REALLY WORTH YOUR LIFE TO DRINK THIS. I THINK A LITTLE EXERCISE COULD HELP EVERYONE HAVE A LITTLE MORE ENERGY. Edited by Jason: This story would have been equally as compelling as all the other "I wound up in the hospital because of 5 hour energy"/"energy drinks are going to magically kill you" comments without the ALL CAPS.
oteo@2010-05-06 15:46:55
5 hour energy is insane. I made the mistake of taking it right before my 2 hour long Geometry lecture. I couldn't sit still at all. My body was literally trembling. It kind of scared me. I took it because I usually fall asleep in class but it was way too much for me. I'll probably have to take this shot when I'm on the verge of passing out or something. But at least it does what it says it will do. I don't recall having a crash either.
Sharon@2010-02-22 22:02:10
Holy COW! I have to pull the grave yeard shift tonight and man oh man! A friend at work suggested 5-hour energy to me and I feel like I want to run a marathon.. though my heart speeds up really fast every so often but this is great stuff! and tinkle on you to anyone who says it tasted bad.. 5-hour energy is some great POWERFULL STUFF! I would stop typing but I just took this 30 minutes ago and I am soooo hyper lol! Expletives removed by Jason
